Are You Really the Boss in Your Own Business?

I recently met with a very successful magazine publisher who was telling me how a chain of retailers for his magazines wanted everything their own way, even at the expense of losing revenue for their stores and missing out on the opportunity to provide real customer service to the customer.

He was mainly concerned that some of the members of this chain, which, was made up of basically "mum & dad" store owners honestly thought that as it was their business, no one else should ask them to do anything over and above what they wanted to do.

As we discussed this further, what "upset" him was what he believed was their mistaken belief that they did not work for a boss and they were in fact the boss and that was it, no debate, no argument, "we do as we please".

He explained, "we all work for a boss, be it the bank, the shareholders, the government, our employees, customers, suppliers, family, if fact, anyone who relies on us for support, service or advice".

He went on to say that if we consider ourselves not answerable to anyone else when we own a business, we are quickly headed for doom or at least a business life of mediocrity.

So who is the boss in your business?
